Embracing Excellence: Singapore Gymnastics' National Squad Selection Policy

Published Wed 06 Mar 2024

In a groundbreaking move in 2018, Singapore Gymnastics (SG) introduced the National Squad, a comprehensive initiative aimed at recognising and selecting athletes training at both the National Training Centre and various clubs across the country. This policy, reviewed annually, has proven to be a catalyst for fostering talent, offering athletes the opportunity to gain recognition and vie for selection to represent Singapore on the national stage. As we embark on the selection process for the period from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025, let's delve into the key aspects of this innovative approach.

Singapore Gymnastics (SG) is gearing up to commence the selection process for the FY24/25 National Squad at the forthcoming 2024 National Championships taking place over the next two weekends.

Key Aspects of the National Squad Selection

The annual selection process takes place at the National Championships in March each year. Athletes selected during the upcoming National Championships will be integrated into the FY24/25 National Squad from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025. Qualifying for the National Squad ensures athletes' eligibility for potential selection to represent Singapore during this specified period.

Objectives of National Squad Selection (Part A)

Identifying Potential: The primary aim is to pinpoint athletes with the potential to excel at designated events, guided by the Event-Specific Criteria.

Recognition through Results: Recognition is given to top-ranked gymnasts in the FIG Senior and Junior categories, achieved through outstanding performances at the annual Singapore Gymnastics National Championships.

2024 National Championships Schedule and National Squad Announcement

The announcement of the Artistic National Squad is scheduled for March 10, following the IAF finals for Junior and Senior categories. Simultaneously, the Rhythmic National Squad will be revealed on March 17. Notably, this year marks the inaugural selection of a Trampoline National Squad, with the announcement set for March 16.

Important Dates for National Squad Athletes and Coaches

Since its establishment, SG has consistently organised athlete induction sessions, recognising the importance of creating a cohesive and supportive environment for gymnasts. In 2024, SG is enhancing its commitment to athlete development by introducing Coach/Club Induction sessions and National Squad training.

Bringing athletes together serves a dual purpose. Firstly, it promotes a sense of unity and camaraderie among participants, fostering a supportive community within the gymnastics fraternity. This shared experience not only encourages mutual encouragement but also facilitates the exchange of ideas and techniques.

Secondly, the introduction of National Squad training aims to elevate the overall excellence of the athletes. By providing a platform for collective training, gymnasts can benefit from exposure to diverse training methodologies, learn from one another's strengths, and collectively raise the bar for performance standards. This collaborative training approach contributes to the holistic development of each athlete, creating an environment conducive to pushing boundaries and achieving new heights in gymnastic prowess.

In essence, these initiatives signify SG's commitment to not only individual athlete development but also to the cultivation of a unified and thriving gymnastics community in Singapore. The synergy created through these gatherings is anticipated to have a positive impact on the athletes' skills, motivation, and overall excellence.

FAQs

Does acceptance into the NTC automatically mean acceptance into the National Squad?
No, being accepted into the NTC does not guarantee acceptance into the National Squad. Athletes must qualify for the National Squad through their performance at the National Championships.

What if the training is conducted at other clubs in Singapore? What are the chances of being accepted into the National Squad?
Qualification for the National Squad is solely based on athletes' performances at the National Championships.

I've noticed some athletes in the National Squad are trained in two clubs, e.g., Singapore Sport School/NTC. How does this work?
Participation in National Championships does not involve athletes representing the NTC. Instead, they are encouraged to represent their school, and more significantly, their former club or full member club, provided that they receive endorsement from the relevant school or club. This policy underscores SG's commitment to recognising the valuable contributions that schools and clubs make to the athlete pathway.
