National Squad Training Programme Introduced to Foster Collaboration and Development in Gymnastics

Published Sat 20 Apr 2024

In a groundbreaking move aimed at enhancing collaboration, skill development, and performance in gymnastics, Singapore Gymnastics have implemented a National Squad Training programme across three disciplines: MAG, WAG & RG. This initiative is designed not only to elevate the performance of athletes but also to strengthen the bonds between coaches and athletes while fostering alignment with club-level coaching.

The programme, set to roll out in 2024, with the first training sessions for WAG & RG already conducted.

In this initial stage there will be three sessions are year for each discipline which focuses on several key objectives:

  1. Building Relationships and Team Atmosphere: The primary goal of the National Squad Training programme is to cultivate a cohesive team atmosphere among national squad coaches and athletes. By fostering strong relationships and a supportive environment, athletes can thrive and reach their full potential.
  2. Enhancing Coaching Impact: Recognising the limitations of just three training sessions, the programme aims to maximise the impact of coaching on athletes' development. Through strategic planning and focused training sessions, coaches will be able to develop valuable skills and techniques that translate into improved performance on the gymnastics stage and in the daily training environment through interaction with the National team coaches and each other.
  3. Aligning with Club Coaches: The programme emphasises the importance of collaboration between national coaches and club-level coaches. By aligning training methodologies and goals, athletes can experience a seamless transition between club and national training environments when selected onto National Teams, ensuring continuity in their development.
  4. Providing Individualised Feedback: One of the key benefits of the National Squad Training programme is the opportunity for athletes to receive personalised feedback from the National Head Coach. This feedback may include advice on skill improvement, routine construction, and strategic approaches to maximise scoring potential.

Commenting on the initiative, Karen Norden, High Performance Technical Director for Singapore Gymnastics, expressed enthusiasm for the programme's potential to elevate the sport. "This initiative is not just about improving performance on the gymnastics floor; it's about building a supportive community of coaches and athletes who are dedicated to achieving excellence together," they remarked.

The introduction of the National Squad Training programme marks a significant step forward in the development of gymnastics, promising to unlock new levels of skill, teamwork, and achievement among athletes, coaches and clubs across the island.

The initial National Squad training sessions for WAG and RG took place on March 24th and April 6th, respectively, and were well received by both coaches and athletes. The MAG's first training session is scheduled for July 6th, followed by subsequent sessions for all three disciplines as detailed below:
