In a significant boost for the future of gymnastics in Singapore, 10 of our national athletes were honored at the Singapore Sport Excellence (spex) Athletes Investiture at the Singapore Sports School on Wednesday (Apr 29).
The ceremony, graced by Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth David Neo, marked a major milestone for our High Performance (HPS) journey. This year, Singapore Gymnastics celebrates a total of 2 spexScholarship and 8 spexPotential athletes, underscoring the depth of talent within our Men’s Artistic, Women’s Artistic, and Rhythmic Gymnastics disciplines.
Leading the charge is Rhythmic Gymnastics star Mikayla Yang, who has been promoted to the prestigious spexScholarship this year. Mikayla, who was previously under the spexPotential program in 2025, has demonstrated incredible growth on the international stage. Her elevation to a spexScholarship comes on the heels of a historic performance at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, where she clinched a silver medal in the Individual All-Around—the best result for a Singaporean individual rhythmic gymnast in history. As a spexScholarship athlete, Mikayla will now receive enhanced support to balance her rigorous full-time training and international competition schedule as she eyes the 2026 Asian Games and beyond.
Our Women’s Artistic Gymnast, Amanda Yap, has been awarded the spexScholarship for the first time. Amanda’s elevation to the scholarship follows a groundbreaking year in which she became the first Singaporean gymnast ever to qualify for an Artistic Gymnastics World Championships final. Competing in Jakarta in October 2025, Amanda reaching the Balance Beam finals, ultimately finishing 6th in the world with a personal best score of 13.333. What made her achievement even more remarkable was her sheer resilience; she balanced her World Championship debut with her GCE O-Level examinations, remarkably flying back to Singapore between the qualifiers and the finals to sit for her Mathematics paper.
Additional highlights from her standout 2025 season include:
2025 SEA Games: Silver medalist on the Balance Beam.
2025 Singapore Championships: Senior All-Around Champion.
Accolades: Named the inaugural Straits Times Young Singaporean of the Year for 2025.
The investiture also highlighted the progression of our youth talent. Jovi Loh, who has been part of the spexPotential program since 2025, continues to be recognized as a key athlete in our pipeline. Jovi made waves in the gymnastics world last year by qualifying for the Junior Men’s All-Around final at the Junior World Championships, proving that Singapore’s next generation is ready to compete with the world’s best. Joining Jovi are seven other promising gymnasts under the spexPotential scheme, which was designed to bridge the gap toward podium success at the SEA Games level.

Building Toward 2029
The increased support for gymnastics aligns with the national push for the 2029 SEA Games, which Singapore will host. With more athletes now receiving full-time training equivalent support and access to the High Performance Sports Institute’s specialist workforce, Singapore Gymnastics is better equipped than ever to chase gold on home soil.
Congratulations to our 2026 spexAthletes!
