Honorary Life Membership Award

On 12 March 2022 the second Honorary Life Membership Award was given to Mr Sng Puay Liang, a person who has made a valuable and outstanding contribution to the Association.

Honorary Life Membership is the highest Award available to recognise the exceptional contribution of an individual to Singapore Gymnastics (SG).

For an individual to be nominated they must have provided gymnastics in Singapore with distinguished and meritorious service for not fewer than 12 consecutive years or 15 years of broken service of no more than two breaks, at a national level.

In considering the award of Honorary Life Membership an individual should have demonstrated significant, sustained and high-quality service enhancing the reputation and future of gymnastics in Singapore.

Mr Sng Puay Liang was nominated by Full Members; Prime Gymnastics Club and Trampoline Singapore. In the application accolades from his many peers over the decades were also included, showing the depth of his contribution and respect he has earned in the Singapore gymnastics community.

Mr Sng Puay Liang has contributed immensely to the development of gymnastics in Singapore.

Athlete

As an athlete, some of Mr Sng Puay Liang's achievements were as follows:

Singapore Combined Schools Representative

  • 1988 ASEAN Schools Gymnastics Championship, Thailand: Parallel Bars - 3rd
  • 1986-88: Pesta Sukan Singapore Open Championship

National Team Representative

  • 1993: XVIII Southeast Asian (SEA) Games

As an Official with Singapore Amateur Gymnastics Association (SAGA)

Mr Sng Puay Liang held several roles in the association.

Judge

Mr Sng Puay Liang attained his international judging brevet in 2005 at the 11th cycle of the Federation of International Gymnastics (FIG) judging course in Zhu Hai, China. Since then, he has officiated in the following National/International competitions (amongst many other club competitions):

  • Asian Junior Championship 2010, 2017

  • ASEAN School Games 2011, 2012, 2016, 2017
  • World University Games 2011, 2013
  • Commonwealth Games 2014, 2018

Besides officiating in competitions, Mr Sng Puay Liang has also shared his judging knowledge extensively. Over the years, he identified and mentored many young aspiring judges. He is always happy and ready to volunteer his time, conduct judging workshops, answering questions from potential judges, even in the wee hours of the morning. Through his continuous efforts, Singapore currently has the highest number of FIG Men's Artistic Gymnastics judges in South East Asia, and the highest number of Category 2 judges as well. As a FIG judge, he is a well-respected judge, receiving invitations from FIG to judge at various competitions such as the African Games. He has indeed put Singapore on the world map of gymnastics!

Coaching

As a coach, Mr Sng Puay Liang is a FIG Coaching Academy Level 3 coach. Although he does not coach full-time or at the elite level, he shares his coaching techniques readily with the National Coaches. Over the years, he has also been conducting various coaching courses such as the NCAP General Gymnastics coaching course under the old coaching pathway, as well as the Intermediate Gymnastics coaching course currently. He also holds the role of mentor coach to various aspiring coaches.

Mr Sng is also always mentoring the coaches at BazGym and conducts frequent workshops and on the ground training with all coaches, from new beginner coaches to experienced coaches taking the competitive groups. Many of these gymnasts are then selected into Singapore Gymnastics' High-Performance Program.

Business Owner

Being the Director of BazGym Gymnastics School, Mr Sng Puay Liang has quietly provided financial assistance and mentored many gymnasts, with several of them eventually moving to the National Training Centre and representing Singapore at international competitions. He firmly believes that a child/athlete should not be disadvantaged in their pursuit of gymnastics due to financial difficulties.

They also provide a PhysioGym programme for kids with special needs. The 1st in Singapore.

Recently BazGym won Corporate Live Wire Prestige Awards 2020/21 as Gymnastics School of the Year. This is a British Magazine bringing notice to gymnastics in Singapore.

The latest award is the Singapore SME 500 Award 2021-2022.
